1 | Introduction
-
This activity should provide participants with two things:
Practical information about how the day will run, including an outline of the day/scheme, an introduction to your workplace and key members of staff involved.
Reflective time, where you refer to key learning and skill development, to help participants plan how to get the most out of the day/scheme.
It can also be a good idea to include a fun icebreaker activity here to allow participants to relax and get to know fellow participants and staff before the day begins.
-
Include a reflective baseline activity, such as a short survey or skill- assessment, where participants are asked to self-assess their skills at the start of the day. The survey/assessment is then repeated at the end of the day.
2 | Ice-breakers
-
Ice-breakers are a great way ease participants into an activity. They allow participants to interact with peers and staff in an informal/fun way.
Icebreakers can be a simple “getting to know you” activity such as introducing yourself and an interesting fact to the person next to you or something more active such as getting the whole group to line up in height/birthday/alphabetical order.
-
Including staff volunteers in the icebreaker allows students to interact with them early on and makes it more impactful for all involved.
3 | Debrief
-
The debrief activity should provide participants with time to reflect on the experiences they have had with you, identify insights gained, skills learned, and new interests developed. The activity could simply be a feedback survey/end-of day skills assessment to help you and the participants assess their progress on learning objectives and skill development.
You could also include an action planning activity to allow participants to set themselves some future goals, which build on the progress made with you.
-
Participants could be divided into small “tutor groups” for this activity, whereby a staff volunteer, who has been involved in the experience, facilitates a small group debrief/reflection. This adds a sense of coherency cross the experience.
